Reiki, Reiki, Reiki! Reiki can help any problem or any ailment, ache or pain by stimulating the body’s own healing abilities. It will go to the root cause of the discomfort, problem or illness and begin working in that space. Reiki meets you where you are and that is a wonderful gift! Reiki is first and foremost deeply relaxing. Some people may actually fall asleep during a session. When the body is relaxed, cortisol levels (also known as your stress hormone) begin to decrease. How is that helpful? First, it’s important to understand how much stress negatively impacts your whole body system. Cortisol interferes with memory and learning. It affects one’s blood pressure and immune system. When a person is chronically stressed, cortisol levels remain high and those individuals are at a higher risk for depression, heart disease, cancer and other serious illnesses. Relaxation brought on by Reiki, can potentially reduce a person’s cortisol levels. Once reduced, he or she is able to think more clearly, prioritize more effectively and begin to regain control of their anxieties and stressors.
We all know the repetitive negative loop stress and anxiety can create. When we are stressed, we eat poorly, we don’t feel like exercising, we are easy to anger and be on edge. Our bodies are tired and we feel poorly. We get upset with ourselves because we are now in this position of discomfort, but we are too tired to adjust, so we keep going and the cycle continues.
But what if there was a positive loop? Our bodies want to be in balance. When they are balanced they feel good and function well. We sleep more soundly and digest our food better. Our minds are clearer when we are calm. We want to exercise and have the energy to make it happen. Our bodies are absorbing nutrients more effectively therefore feeding our cells and keeping our immune system strong. Our strong immune system fights off illness and disease. Reiki helps create this amazing positive cycle we strive for and it plays an important role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
The immune system and nervous system are in constant communication with each other. Our mental and emotional states impact our immune, cardiovascular and digestive systems in a manner that can influence disease. Every living entity is comprised of an energetic system. That is why doctors use electrocardiogram’s (ECG) and electroencephalogram’s (EEG) to measure activity in the human heart and brain, respectively. When our mental and emotional systems are under stress and suffering from anxiety, this energetic system is interrupted or blocked and the communication between systems breaks down.
Reiki practitioners work with a client’s energetic system, also know as ki or universal life force energy, and aim to re-tune and unblock the communication pathways. By using a therapist’s hands as a conduit for Reiki energy, a client’s energy field is stimulated and the body’s auto healing response gets to work! Over the session or sessions (if a client has chronic issues), the energy field responds and balance is found. This balance promotes physical and psychological healing. Physical benefits reported include improvements with overall stress and tension, joint pain, headaches, insomnia, stomach and digestive ailments and other minor conditions. Psychological benefits reported include release of anger, fear, worry and other emotional barriers.
